Microsoft Officially Announces NAV 2016: “e-Everything” and Other Exciting Advancements

It’s a very exciting time for NAV! Microsoft revealed at the World Partner Conference last month that the next release of NAV will be officially called NAV 2016. This major release will introduce several new capabilities that the NAV team had advised, such as an "e-Everything" approach to document automation and integration as well as new workflow capabilities.

Microsoft also showed off what could be coming as NAV evolves—bringing NAV data and features more directly into line with workers' activities within Office 365—but there is more to the evolution than features; priorities are shifting in the Microsoft ecosystem toward embracing the larger Microsoft cloud for business, including greater adoption of the idea of "simplified NAV" for customers who want to buy and deploy a business solution as quickly as possible, even within minutes.

NAV 2016 will also include other important updates, including compatibility with Azure SQL, "native" integration with CRM Online, an improved Windows phone interface, and continued improvement on the Office 365 experience, and Azure deployment capabilities.

In addition, the roadmap has been updated, confirming that new version updates are planned for 2016 and 2017. Most exciting in the “Possible Future Functionality” category was the demonstration of Microsoft’s focus on blending productivity with customer engagement by opening an email and showing how Outlook connected to NAV running in Office 365 could in the future automatically detect a customer and surface details from NAV dynamically without changing screens—allowing customer data to be both viewed and updated from the email display.

Another demonstration involved the creation of a sales quote for the customer from within the email interface, including the addition of line items, checking the customer's credit limit, completing the quote, and emailing it back to the customer within seconds.

Stay tuned for more updates on this next exciting release!

New Option for Certification Exams for NAV Professionals Now Available

Ongoing professional education is critical, especially with Dynamics NAV. One of the best tools for learning and ensuring standards was discontinued by Microsoft last year—the certification program and exams for Dynamics NAV. However, an ambitious group has banded together to organize the Association of Dynamics Professionals, whose primary purpose is to bring Dynamics professionals together. One of their first priorities is to redesign the NAV exam and credentialing program, including providing multiple levels of credentials rather than one overall exam. The credentialing council, an independent body within the Association, is dedicated to promoting and administering these programs. The initial objective is to get the Certification, Installation, and Configuration exams ready for the first exam sittings by October 2015 for NAV. Learn more by visiting the Association of Dynamics Professionals.

Want to help? The Association is asking NAV community members to submit exam questions and will be using a crowdsourcing approach in the exam creation. The Exam Writers website provides more information and tools, which include a registration form, webinar on how to write questions, release form, template for writing questions, and “how to” questions. An exam committee will review all submissions, provide editing, and make selections for the bank of questions for future exam use. Certifications and credentialing are so valuable to the NAV community. Submit your exam questions today!
