General Data Protection Regulation and Microsoft Dynamics NAV

General Data Protection Regulation and Microsoft Dynamics NAV

The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been in effect since May 25, 2018. This new regulation establishes a new global standard for privacy rights, security, and compliance. Protecting personal data in your systems and reporting on and reviewing for compliance are key requirements of GDPR. The GDPR imposes new rules on companies, government agencies, non-profits, and other organizations that offer goods and services to people in the European Union (EU) or that collect and analyse data tied to EU residents. The GDPR applies no matter where you are located.

For Microsoft Dynamics NAV users, there is an approach for how you can think about both enhancing your data protection capabilities as well as how you may want to think about complying with GDPR.

GDPR review can be done in four stages – Discover, Manage, Protect and Report.

  1. Discover—identify what personal data you have and where it resides.
  2. Manage—determine how personal data is used and accessed.
  3. Protect—establish security controls to prevent, detect, and respond to vulnerabilities and data breaches.
  4. Report—execute on data requests, report data breaches, and keep required documentation.

Complying with GDPR will not be easy, but Microsoft is dedicated to helping partners and customers meet the requirements of the GDPR. As of May 2018, Dynamics NAV 2018, Dynamics NAV 2017, Dynamics NAV 2016, and Dynamics NAV 2015 have been updated with tools to help ensure GDPR compliance.

For a more in-depth look at GDPR compliance Microsoft has also prepared a Dynamics NAV whitepaper. This site also includes a thorough FAQ section that covers information regarding the Service Trust Portal, Compliance Manager and Privacy/GDPR.

Microsoft has also made significant improvements in their cloud-based services in efforts to foster GDPR compliance.
