ArcherPoint Dynamics Developer Digest - vol 151

ArcherPoint Dynamics Developer Digest - vol 151

The NAV community, including the ArcherPoint technical staff, is made up of developers, project managers, and consultants who are constantly communicating, with the common goal of sharing helpful information with one another to help customers be more successful.

As they run into issues and questions, find the answers, and make new discoveries, they post them on blogs, forums, social media…so everyone can benefit. We in Marketing watch these interactions and never cease to be amazed by the creativity, dedication, and brainpower we’re so fortunate to have in this community—so we thought, wouldn’t it be great to share this great information with everyone who might not have the time to check out the multitude of resources out there? So, the ArcherPoint Microsoft Dynamics NAV Developer Digest was born. Each week, we present a collection of thoughts and findings from NAV experts and devotees around the world. We hope these insights will benefit you, too.

News about Dynamics NAV from Microsoft Inspire

Totovic shares news from Inspire, notably that both Dynamics NAV on premise and on Azure will continue to be developed. In fact, all Dynamics products will continue to be developed.

Some, not all, new features were discussed as well, including enhanced Power BI integration, which looks interesting, plus things like OCR vendor sync, reminders from Outlook, interactions from contact cards, connection wizards, approval flows, and more, promise better productivity and increased connections where our data lives.

Creating the Definition Code for OCR in Dynamics NAV 2016

Adrian: Is anyone familiar with OCR? Are “Data Exchange Type” and “Data Exchange Def Code” necessary to “Create Document”? Do we need to manually set them up? The client has two databases. One works well with “Create Document” while the other gets the error message that the data exchange type or def code is missing. The client said they do not remember if setting up the data exchange type on the database that works. Could that be an issue of the setup on the OCR portal? Thanks in advance for your help.

Matt T: I’ve never set it up personally, but you should have to set something like those. Without a data exchange framework definition it doesn’t know how or what to send.

Adrian: Hey Matt, thanks for your reply. NAV 2016 demo comes with all data exchange type, definition, and all related data but the client does not have any of those. So Alan Lyczkowski helped use rapid start to import those data into the client’s system and the problem is solved.

Where Used and Compare Tools for Dynamics NAV

One of our newer team members, Len, asks a couple of questions:

  1. What do you use for a “Where Used” tool for NAV? I am currently using GDT Where Used but wondering if anyone has anything else that they really like?
  2. What do you use for a compare tool for text files? I am currently using WinMerge but wondering if anyone has anything else that they really like?

Thanks all.

Dan: Prism is the primary tool for Where Used. We have an enterprise license. Also, we have object manager which can perform Where Used. This is more time consuming as you need an object only DB, but has some additional capabilities.

I believe everyone has their favorite compare tool. KDif, and beyond compare, would be a couple.

Todd T: Bill Warnke introduced me to Prism. It is really great.

Matt: I recommend Visual Studio or Beyond Compare for comparisons.

Tom H: I use Prism for Where Used. I can show you how to get an object set from a customer that’s within our license range if you have trouble just doing a “select all” on the objects because they have some weird add-ons.

And I generally use KDiff as my compare tool; it’s free and it does enough for what I need.

Thanks for tuning in to Dev Digest this week!
