ArcherPoint Dynamics NAV Business Central Developer Digest - vol 343

This edition of developer digest is a meaty one—covering everything from printing barcodes on a report to changing .NET add-ins and the MB-800 exam.

The Dynamics NAV and Business Central community, including the ArcherPoint technical staff, is made up of developers, project managers, and consultants who are constantly communicating, with the common goal of  sharing helpful information with one another to help customers be more successful.

As they run into issues and questions, find the answers, and make new discoveries, they post them on blogs, forums, social media…so everyone can benefit. We in Marketing watch these interactions and never cease to be amazed by the creativity, dedication, and brainpower we’re so fortunate to have in this community—so we thought, wouldn’t it be great to share this great information with everyone who might not have the time to check out the multitude of resources out there? So, the ArcherPoint Microsoft Dynamics NAV Developer Digest was born. Each week, we present a collection of thoughts and findings from NAV/BC experts and devotees around the world. We hope these insights will benefit you, too.

Printing Barcodes on a Report in Dynamics Business Central

Christine H is perplexed: “Hi all. I am wondering if anyone has an example of printing a barcode on a report in Business Central. I have a report that needs to use a Code128A barcode. It looks great in Report Designer, where I have installed the font locally, but when I run the report in BC, it looks wrong. I know it needs a Start character, a Stop character (which I have added), and a CheckSum character. Do we have the logic to calculate that somewhere already? I have Googled it and found suggestions to use web services, streaming, and APIs. I am hoping we have an existing solution somewhere I can use.”

Kyle asks: “Do you have the font installed in your Docker container?

Suresh offers: “There are few projects where we have implemented this without using fonts.”

Christine adds: “Unfortunately, barcode fonts are not available in Dynamics 365 Business Central SaaS. The suggestions I have found so far involve using either web services or Azure functions.”

Tim suggests: “Not sure if it can replace it, but here is a free barcode generator from DMS

Barcode formats include Datamatrix, QR Code, Code 128, and Code 39.

All source code and layout for the reports are available on the Insight Works’ knowledge base for download.

All reports can generate barcodes suitable for use with WMS Express and Warehouse Insight.”
