ArcherPoint Dynamics NAV / Business Central Developer Digest - vol 253ArcherPoint's Developer Digest Weekly Blog

The NAV community, including the ArcherPoint technical staff, is made up of developers, project managers, and consultants who are constantly communicating, with the common goal of  sharing helpful information with one another to help customers be more successful.

As they run into issues and questions, find the answers, and make new discoveries, they post them on blogs, forums, social media...so everyone can benefit. We in Marketing watch these interactions and never cease to be amazed by the creativity, dedication, and brainpower we’re so fortunate to have in this community—so we thought, wouldn’t it be great to share this great information with everyone who might not have the time to check out the multitude of resources out there? So, the ArcherPoint Microsoft Dynamics NAV Developer Digest was born. Each week, we present a collection of thoughts and findings from NAV experts and devotees around the world. We hope these insights will benefit you, too.

AL Report Writing: Getting Lost in Nested Data Items?

Kyle shares another: “Developer Tip of the Day: Writing a report in AL? Are you getting lost in the nested data items and the various ways that can be filtered? It is also hard to line up the triggers with the data items. I had a professor in college that helped me with a programming error. His advice was ‘Sprinkle some writeln.’ Move this around your OnPreDataItem triggers to help you troubleshoot:

Message(TableCaption);

Message(GetFilters);

Error(Format(Count));

Tom H responds: “I used to have to write ASP Classic without a debugger, and I did a lot of stuff to write variables to the screen so that I could figure out what was wrong.”

Bill W adds: “Code folding helps with the triggers. If you want to see a data item's (nested) triggers, go down to the next data item, collapse it, and you should be looking at the right triggers. Collapsing the CopyLoop in my example brings me right to the Purchase Header triggers.”

See the VSC user guide on Folding.

Michael H adds: “An additional note about code folding. Here’s how to use a keyboard shortcut to do code folding.”

MICR Check Printing

Kyle has a situation: “I have a customer that needs to do MICR checks. Way back in the day, the only vendor I knew that made printers with magnetic toner was Troy Systems. What other printers have you used? Yes, I already checked with the bank and they say the magnetism is still required. I think that is not true, but that is what Bank of America is saying.”

Crystal suggests: “I would have the customer call Office Depot or search online to see if magnetic toner is available for their printers. I have never had a customer experience an issue getting one for whatever printer they had.”

Dynamics NAV Mobile Apps Updates

Suresh shares that the Dynamics NAV mobile apps have been updated. No new features were added. This is simply a technical update to ensure all Dynamics NAV customers are fully supported.
