ArcherPoint Dynamics NAV Developer Digest - vol 255

The NAV community, including the ArcherPoint technical staff, is made up of developers, project managers, and consultants who are constantly communicating, with the common goal of  sharing helpful information with one another to help customers be more successful.

As they run into issues and questions, find the answers, and make new discoveries, they post them on blogs, forums, social media…so everyone can benefit. We in Marketing watch these interactions and never cease to be amazed by the creativity, dedication, and brainpower we’re so fortunate to have in this community—so we thought, wouldn’t it be great to share this great information with everyone who might not have the time to check out the multitude of resources out there? So, the ArcherPoint Microsoft Dynamics NAV Developer Digest was born. Each week, we present a collection of thoughts and findings from NAV experts and devotees around the world. We hope these insights will benefit you, too.

Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics NAV Cumulative Updates for August 2019

Saurav shares the links for downloading Cumulative Updates for the month of August 2019:

Kyle comments: “Awesome list of application fixes. Disappointing list of platform fixes. Thanks for the post.”

Developer Tip of the Day: Host Internal

Kyle shares: “Developer Tip of the Day: If you have an app running inside of a Docker container (say, BC), and that app needs to be able to see the Docker host (your laptop), you can use the name host.docker.internal, and that will resolve to the correct IP address. Docker adds that into the container Hosts file. This is useful if you need to map network drives or any other sort of network activity that might be hosted on the host.”

Adding Users to Business Central SaaS Accounts

Sara Keck notifies the team: “I recently found out that once you add users to Business Central SaaS, they cannot be removed. You can remove the license from the user in Office 365 admin console or CSP console, but the user will always appear in the User cards. Fortunately, having the users there with no licenses has no functional impact on the environment. The idea of hiding or filtering out inactive users has been suggested as a product improvement.

Also of note – if you are in the User cards and click ‘Get Users from Office 365’ from the Process menu, all O365 users will be added to Business Central. If you do, you will see all those users in Business Central indefinitely (or until that changes in future updates).”

Suresh includes: “For auditing purposes, and to track the users’ activity in the system, Microsoft does not allow you to delete the users. You can always disable them and create your own view for active users with state enabled, and then save it as a view.”

Kyle adds: “This is also the case in Business Central on premises. The only way I have been able to remove them is with SQL.”

Suresh continues: “If you delete the personalizations for that user from the personalization tables, then you can delete them, *** but it is not recommended to delete the user, unless you accidentally created it.”

Saurav joins the conversation: “Yes, I agree that we should never delete a user. Its related records and should not be deleted.”

Sara clarifies: “I usually agree as well—but in this case, I had a user accidentally click the Get User from Office 365 button. It brought over all Office 365 users—many of which were not ever going to be added to Business Central.”

Kyle has one last comment: “I want it noted for the Permanent Record(tm) that I only deleted an accidental user, in a test database, months before go-live. I am not willy-nilly deleting live database users with SQL. I only delete General Ledger entries with SQL.”
